CAS:Dodecenylsuccinic acid (DSSA) is a chemical that is structurally similar to citric acid. It is used in the production of detergent compositions and as an antioxidant. Dodecenylsuccinic acid is also used to study mitochondrial membrane potential and the effects of ethylene diamine on tubule cells. DSSA has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, by disrupting the lipid bilayer at the mitochondrial membrane, which leads to decreased ATP production and cell death. Dodecenylsuccinic acid can be used to produce sodium salts that are stable in hydrochloric acid, making it a useful additive for sodium-containing products like sodium citrate. The stability of dodecenylsuccinic acid in water vapor has been shown through its ability to form particles with hydrophobic surfaces that do not dissolve easily in water.
