CAS:Controlled ProductHarmaline is a natural compound with cox-2 inhibitory activity. It has been shown to decrease the mitochondrial membrane potential and significant cytotoxicity in murine hepatoma cells. Harmaline also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. Harmaline can be used as a model system for inhibitor molecules that affect protein phosphatases and kinases, such as protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B). The effects of harmaline on the biological properties of PTP1B have been investigated using molecular docking analysis. This analysis showed that harmaline binds to the ATP binding site in the catalytic domain of PTP1B.
