The reaction of 2,2,3,3-tetramethylbutanoic acid with an alkane forms a carboxylic acid. When 2,2,3,3-tetramethylbutanoic acid is heated with an alkene in the presence of sodium metal or potassium tert-butoxide it undergoes an isomerization reaction to form a 1-alkene. This reaction can also be carried out using a catalyst such as nickel or palladium on charcoal.
