CAS:Nicarbazin is a drug that has been used in the treatment of liver lesions caused by nicotinic acid. Nicarbazin is a potent inhibitor of bacterial nitrite reductase and has been found to be active against Gram-positive bacteria. Nicarbazin inhibits the growth of certain Gram-negative bacteria, but not others. Nicarbazin also has some inhibitory effects on human serum methylamine N-methyltransferase, an enzyme involved in the metabolism of nicotine and nicotinic acid. Nicarbazin binds to receptor sites on cells and prevents the formation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) from NADH and ATP. This inhibition causes an increase in intracellular levels of NADH, which leads to an increase in glycolysis.
