:3-[(3-Cholamidopropyl)dimethylammonio]-1-propanesulfonate hydrate
Description:
3-[(3-Cholamidopropyl)dimethylammonio]-1-propanesulfonate hydrate, commonly referred to as CHAPS, is a zwitterionic detergent widely used in biochemistry and molecular biology. It features a hydrophilic sulfonate group and a hydrophobic cholamine tail, which allows it to solubilize membrane proteins while maintaining their functional integrity. CHAPS is known for its mild nature compared to other detergents, making it suitable for applications such as protein extraction, purification, and stabilization. It is particularly effective in maintaining protein structure and activity during electrophoresis and chromatography. The substance is typically supplied as a hydrate, indicating the presence of water molecules in its crystalline form, which can influence its solubility and stability. CHAPS is also characterized by its ability to form micelles, which can encapsulate hydrophobic molecules, enhancing their solubility in aqueous environments. Its zwitterionic nature minimizes non-specific interactions, making it a preferred choice in various biochemical assays and studies involving membrane proteins.

CAS:
CHAPS hydrate is a common buffer used in research. It is an amphiphilic surfactant that has been used as a detergent for plasma membrane proteins. CHAPS is also used in assays to dilute and solubilize membrane proteins. CHAPS hydrate can be easily removed by dialysis or gel filtration, making it suitable for molecular mass determination by fluorometry. However, its use is not recommended when the assay involves polyvalent metals or metal ions that are sensitive to nonspecific chelating agents. Furthermore, CHAPS hydrate is used as a polymer matrix in binding assays to remove metal ions from protein solutions. It has also been reported to be an anti-tumor agent against some cell lines through the inhibition of galactosidase function.
Formula:C32H58N2O7S·xH2OPurity:Min. 95%
