CAS:5-Benzyl hydantoin is a chemical compound that belongs to the group of hydantoins. It is an inhibitor of bacterial growth and can be used for the treatment of infections caused by bacteria, such as those caused by Salmonella typhi. 5-Benzyl hydantoin has been shown to have a high potency against this bacterium, but has not yet been tested extensively. The activity of 5-benzylhydantoin was detected in the range of 0.001 to 1 mM using an enzyme assay with purified sulfate fractionation and metal ion, at pH 7.5 and 37°C. This drug was found to work best in acidic environments (pH 4) and at high concentrations (1mM). These results were obtained from a molecular modelling study that showed the interaction between 5-benzylhydantoin with bacterial protein RacE, which catalyses the formation of racemic mixtures from enantiomeric compounds.
