1-Chloro-1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethane

Description:
1-Chloro-1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethane, commonly referred to as HFC-134a, is a halogenated hydrocarbon with the chemical formula C2ClF4. It is a colorless gas at room temperature and has a slightly sweet odor. This compound is primarily used as a refrigerant in air conditioning and refrigeration systems due to its favorable thermodynamic properties and low toxicity. It has a relatively low boiling point, making it effective in heat transfer applications. 1-Chloro-1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethane is non-flammable and has a low potential for ozone depletion, which makes it a more environmentally friendly alternative compared to older refrigerants like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). However, it is a potent greenhouse gas, contributing to global warming, which has led to regulatory measures aimed at reducing its use. The substance is stable under normal conditions but can decompose at high temperatures, releasing toxic gases. Proper handling and disposal are essential to minimize environmental impact and health risks.

    Controlled Product
    CAS:

1-Chloro-1,1,2,2-Tetrafluoroethane is a reactive gas that can be used as a reactant for the synthesis of other compounds. 1-Chloro-1,1,2,2-Tetrafluoroethane reacts with alkali metals to produce hydrogen chloride and hydrogen fluoride. It also reacts with water vapor in the presence of an electroluminescent device to produce light. The reaction product depends on the temperature: at high temperatures (above 500 ˚C), it produces hydrogen chloride and chlorine; at lower temperatures (below 500 ˚C), it produces hydrogen chloride and fluorine.
