2,4,6-Trihydroxybenzophenone

Description:
2,4,6-Trihydroxybenzophenone, with the CAS number 3555-86-0, is an organic compound that belongs to the class of benzophenones, characterized by its three hydroxyl (-OH) groups positioned at the 2, 4, and 6 positions of the benzene ring. This compound typically appears as a solid, often in crystalline form, and is known for its ability to absorb ultraviolet (UV) light, making it useful as a UV filter in various applications, including cosmetics and plastics. Its chemical structure contributes to its antioxidant properties, which can help in stabilizing formulations by preventing oxidative degradation. Additionally, 2,4,6-Trihydroxybenzophenone is soluble in organic solvents but has limited solubility in water. The presence of multiple hydroxyl groups enhances its reactivity and potential for forming hydrogen bonds, influencing its interactions in chemical reactions and applications. Safety data should be consulted for handling and exposure guidelines, as with any chemical substance.

    CAS:

2,4,6-Trihydroxybenzophenone is a phenolic compound that has been shown to have significant inhibitory activities against the growth of bacteria in vitro. It can be used as a preservative for oils and fats. This product also inhibits the benzoate degradation pathway in E. coli and inhibits the synthesis of phenylpropanoids by inhibiting the activity of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL). 2,4,6-Trihydroxybenzophenone also has an inhibitory effect on cell proliferation and induces apoptosis in human leukemia cells. 2,4,6-Trihydroxybenzophenone belongs to the group of compounds called hypericins (hyperforin) that are produced by Hypericum perforatum plants. The biosynthesis of this molecule is thought to involve two consecutive hydroxylations at positions 4 and 6 on the aromatic ring.
