4-(Methylsulfanyl)-1,2-dihydropyrimidin-2-one is a thione that has been studied in electrochemistry, photochemistry, and magnetic properties. The UV absorption spectrum of 4-(methylsulfanyl)-1,2-dihydropyrimidin-2-one displays the cyclic nature of this molecule. The structural features of the molecule have been elucidated by x-ray crystallography and functional theory. The tautomeric form has been characterized using magnetic studies and cyclic voltammetry. These studies reveal that the tautomeric form is more stable than the other forms at low pH values and increases in stability with increased electron density on sulfur atoms. Disulphide derivatives were obtained by reacting 4-(methylsulfanyl)-1,2-dihydropyrimidin-2-one with sodium dithionite.
