This enzyme converts inosine 5'-monophosphate (IMP) to xanthosine 5'-monophosphate (XMP) and is essential for the synthesis of purines. By inhibiting IMPDH, 5-amino-1H-imidazole-4-carboxamide prevents the formation of XMP, which leads to the depletion of purines, thereby inhibiting DNA synthesis. In addition to its role as an anti-inflammatory agent, this drug has been shown to reduce disease activity in bowel disease patients by reducing nitrate reductase activity.
