Piroxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that has minimal toxicity. It is active against squamous cell cancer and other tumor cells, but not against normal cells. Piroxicam blocks the production of prostaglandins (PGE2) by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase. This inhibition leads to decreased inflammation and pain. Piroxicam also has anti-inflammatory properties and has been shown to be effective in rat models of rheumatoid arthritis. Piroxicam can cause a variety of side effects, including headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, rash, itching or dry skin. The most serious side effect is an increased risk for heart attack or stroke in people who are already at risk due to other factors like smoking or high blood pressure.
