nitro blue tetrazolium

Description:
Nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) is a chemical compound commonly used as a redox indicator and a histological stain. It is characterized by its ability to undergo reduction, resulting in a color change that is often utilized in various biochemical assays, particularly in the detection of superoxide radicals. NBT is a yellow to pale orange powder that is soluble in water and exhibits a distinctive blue color upon reduction to formazan. This property makes it valuable in studies involving oxidative stress and cellular metabolism. In addition to its role in research, NBT is also employed in the field of microbiology for the identification of certain bacteria based on their metabolic activity. The compound is generally considered stable under standard laboratory conditions, but it should be handled with care, as with all chemical substances, to avoid potential hazards. Overall, nitro blue tetrazolium serves as an important tool in both analytical and clinical chemistry, providing insights into various biological processes.

  • 3-Nitrotetrazolium blue chloride

    CAS:

3-Nitrotetrazolium blue chloride is a potent inhibitor of bacterial growth in the presence of azide. It inhibits the production of xanthine oxidase by S. typhimurium and has been shown to have potent inhibitory activity against arvensis and rhamnocitrin, both of which are important for bacterial cell wall synthesis. 3-Nitrotetrazolium blue chloride also has antioxidant effects, which may be due to its ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species (e.g., superoxide) or its ability to reduce nitric oxide radicals. The flavonoids found in this compound are responsible for these effects. 3-Nitrotetrazolium blue chloride can also act as an antimutagen when it is incubated with DNA damage induced by ultraviolet light or a mutagenic chemical such as 2-nitrofluorene.
