CAS:

3-(Methylsulfanyl)-1H-indole is a heterocyclic compound that contains a methylsulfanyl group. It is an orally active oxidant and thermally reactive molecule with a carbazole-like structure. 3-(Methylsulfanyl)-1H-indole undergoes oxidation in the presence of chloride ions to form sulfoxide, which can be reversibly converted back to the original compound by addition of hydrogen sulfide. The hypervalent character of this compound makes it switchable between two different oxidation states. 3-(Methylsulfanyl)-1H-indole has been shown to react with sulfoxides, such as dibenzothiophene-4,5-dithiol, to form products in which the sulfur atom is present in high oxidation states.
