Disulfide, bis(4-fluorophenyl)

Description:
Disulfide, bis(4-fluorophenyl), also known by its CAS number 405-31-2, is an organic compound characterized by the presence of two 4-fluorophenyl groups connected by a disulfide (-S-S-) linkage. This compound typically exhibits a pale yellow to light brown appearance and is soluble in organic solvents such as dichloromethane and acetone, but has limited solubility in water. The presence of the fluorine atom in the phenyl rings can influence the compound's reactivity and physical properties, such as its boiling point and melting point, by enhancing electron-withdrawing characteristics. Disulfides are known for their role in stabilizing protein structures and can participate in redox reactions, making them significant in various chemical and biological processes. Additionally, bis(4-fluorophenyl) disulfide may find applications in materials science, organic synthesis, and as a potential intermediate in the production of pharmaceuticals or agrochemicals. Safety precautions should be taken when handling this compound, as disulfides can be irritants and may pose health risks if inhaled or ingested.
