4,16-Androstadien-3-one

Description:
4,16-Androstadien-3-one, with the CAS number 4075-07-4, is a steroidal compound that belongs to the class of androgens. It is characterized by its unique structure, which includes a cyclopentanoperhydrophenanthrene core typical of steroids, with specific functional groups that contribute to its biological activity. This compound is known for its role as a pheromone in various species, influencing social and reproductive behaviors. It is typically found in the form of a colorless to pale yellow liquid or solid, depending on the conditions. The compound exhibits low solubility in water but is soluble in organic solvents, which is common for steroidal compounds. Its biological activity is primarily linked to its interaction with androgen receptors, which can influence gene expression and physiological processes. Additionally, 4,16-androstadien-3-one has been studied for its potential effects on human behavior and attraction, making it a subject of interest in both biochemical and psychological research. Safety data indicates that, like many steroids, it should be handled with care due to potential hormonal effects.

    CAS:
4,16-Androstadien-3-one (4,16A) is a non-competitive inhibitor of 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and 17β hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. It has significant interactions with humans and testicular enzymes. 4,16A inhibits the production of testosterone in men and estrogens in women by inhibiting the conversion of these steroid hormones to their corresponding metabolites. This inhibition is due to competitive inhibition at the enzyme level. The enzyme has an optimal pH range of 7.5–8.5 and is stimulated by activated chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide or NADPH. 4,16A also interacts with rat liver microsomes as it binds to cytochrome P450 enzymes that catalyze reactions that are necessary for hormone synthesis.
