Ribavirin 5'-monophosphate sodium salt (RPMPS) is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed to form ribavirin 5'-triphosphate (RTP). This active form inhibits the polymerase chain reaction by binding to DNA polymerase. Ribavirin has been shown to be effective against cell lines resistant to other antiviral drugs such as zirconium oxide.
