(S)-3-Amino-2-pyrrolidinone is a potent inhibitor of serine proteinases, including trypsin, chymotrypsin, and elastase. It also has anti-coagulant properties that are similar to heparin. (S)-3-Amino-2-pyrrolidinone is used in the treatment of carotid artery disease and as an anticoagulant in deep vein thrombosis prophylaxis.
