:R-(-)-1,2-Propanediol
Description:
R-(-)-1,2-Propanediol, also known as R-(-)-propylene glycol, is a chiral organic compound characterized by its two hydroxyl (-OH) groups, making it a diol. It is a colorless, odorless, and hygroscopic liquid with a sweet taste, commonly used in food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics due to its non-toxic nature. The compound is soluble in water and many organic solvents, which enhances its utility in various applications. Its chiral nature means it exists in two enantiomeric forms, with the R-(-) form being the biologically active isomer. R-(-)-1,2-Propanediol is often utilized as a humectant, solvent, and emulsifier, contributing to moisture retention in products. Additionally, it has applications in the production of antifreeze and as a carrier for flavors and fragrances. The compound is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) when used in food products, although its safety profile should be considered in specific contexts, particularly in high concentrations or prolonged exposure.

CAS:<p>R-(-)-1,2-Propanediol is a diol that is used as an additive in pharmaceutical preparations. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of several genera of bacteria and fungi, including Actinomyces, Bacillus, Clostridium, Corynebacterium, Enterobacteriaceae (Escherichia coli), Lactobacillus, Micrococcus, Mycobacteria (M. tuberculosis), Nocardia, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. R-(-)-1,2-Propanediol also inhibits the production of carbon source from glucose by inhibiting the enzyme pyruvate dehydrogenase which catalyzes the conversion of pyruvate to acetyl coenzyme A. R-(-)-1,2-Propanediol does not show any significant effect on bacterial growth when it is used at concentrations below 100mM.
