CAS:Controlled ProductTriphenylphosphonium is a reactive phosphonium salt that is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of 1,2,4-butanetriol. The synthesis of the triphenylphosphonium salt from the sodium salt of butyric acid and ferrocene is shown in this scheme. This synthetic route provides for planar chirality and an asymmetric synthesis. The byproduct, butyric acid, can be converted to its conjugate base with ammonium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide to provide cholic acid. Cholic acid is a hepatoprotective agent that has been used in the treatment of liver disease.
