(R)-(+)-3-Butyn-2-ol can also be used to synthesize glyoxylate, which is an intermediate for the production of antibiotics. The synthesis of (R)-(+)-3-butyn-2-ol starts with the alkylation reaction between acetylene and formaldehyde, followed by a cross-coupling reaction with bromoethane and lithium aluminum hydride.
