Echinenone

Description:
Echinenone is a natural carotenoid pigment, classified as a ketocarotenoid, with the chemical formula C40H56O. It is primarily found in various marine organisms, including certain species of algae and fish, and is known for its antioxidant properties. Echinenone exhibits a characteristic orange to reddish color, which contributes to the pigmentation in these organisms. The compound is soluble in organic solvents but has limited solubility in water. Its structure features a long hydrocarbon chain with conjugated double bonds, which is typical of carotenoids, allowing it to absorb light in the visible spectrum. Echinenone plays a role in photosynthesis and photoprotection, helping organisms to manage light exposure and oxidative stress. Additionally, it has garnered interest in nutritional and pharmaceutical research due to its potential health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties. As a compound, it is stable under normal conditions but may degrade under extreme light or heat exposure.

  • Echinenone

    CAS:

Echinenone is a carotenoid with high values. It inhibits the activity of acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that breaks down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Echinenone has been found to be effective in wastewater treatment, due to its ability to bind and remove heavy metals from water. In addition, it has been shown to have photosynthetic activity and is a potential replacement for chlorophyll A in some plants. This compound is homologous to zeaxanthin and astaxanthin, which are also carotenoids. The reaction mechanism for echinenone is similar to that of other carotenoids: it undergoes oxidation by light and reacts with oxygen-containing compounds, such as peroxides or free radicals.
