Ethylboronic acid is a β-amino acid with a serine protease inhibitory effect. It has been shown to inhibit the Toll-like receptor cascade, which is involved in the inflammatory response. Ethylboronic acid also inhibits the serine proteases that are responsible for cleaving peptides at their carboxy termini. This inhibition leads to an increase in the level of active peptides and a decrease in the level of inactive peptides, which can lead to an antimicrobial effect. Ethylboronic acid also inhibits chloride ion channels, which may lead to new treatments for asthma and cancer.
