:Lactulose
Description:
Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide composed of fructose and galactose, primarily used as a laxative and in the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy. It is a colorless to light yellow, viscous liquid that is soluble in water, making it easy to administer. Lactulose is not absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, which allows it to exert its effects by drawing water into the colon, thereby softening stools and promoting bowel movements. Additionally, it is fermented by colonic bacteria, producing short-chain fatty acids and lowering pH, which can help reduce ammonia levels in patients with liver disease. Lactulose has a sweet taste, making it palatable for oral consumption. Its stability under various pH conditions and its non-toxic nature contribute to its widespread use in medical applications. While generally well-tolerated, potential side effects may include bloating, gas, and diarrhea, particularly with excessive doses. Overall, lactulose is a valuable therapeutic agent in managing constipation and certain liver-related conditions.
