It is also a membrane-permeable small molecule, which can be taken up by cells and accumulate in mitochondria. DS44170716 may act as an intracellular Ca2+ chelator, preventing reactive cytosolic Ca2+ from entering the mitochondria and thereby inhibiting cellular signaling pathways involved in cell death. DS44170716 has been shown to prevent liver injury induced by ischemia reperfusion in rats.
