:2,6-Di-tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenol
Description:
2,6-Di-tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenol, commonly known as BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene), is an organic compound with antioxidant properties, primarily used as a food preservative and in various industrial applications. It appears as a white to light yellow crystalline solid and is characterized by its phenolic structure, which contributes to its ability to inhibit oxidative degradation of fats and oils. The presence of two tert-butyl groups enhances its lipophilicity, while the methoxy group increases its stability and solubility in organic solvents. BHT is known for its effectiveness in preventing rancidity in food products and is also utilized in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and rubber manufacturing. It has a relatively low toxicity profile, but its safety has been a subject of debate, leading to regulatory scrutiny in some regions. BHT is stable under normal conditions but can undergo degradation when exposed to extreme temperatures or light. Overall, its unique chemical structure and properties make it a valuable compound in various applications, particularly in preserving the quality of perishable goods.

CAS:
3,5-Di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole (BHT) is a chemical compound with the molecular formula C10H12O2. It is a white to yellowish waxy solid that is soluble in organic solvents and insoluble in water. BHT has been subjected to toxicity studies and found to have no acute toxic effects in rats, but does have potential for cardiac effects when administered at high doses. BHT has been shown to inhibit eugenol metabolism by competing with the enzyme flavonol glycoside hydroxylase, which leads to an increase of intracellular calcium levels and subsequent cardiac effects. This chemical also inhibits enzymes such as esterases, dehydrogenases, reductases, oxidases and transaminases. BHT also has been shown to inhibit uptake of radiolabeled drugs by rat liver microsomes and can be used as a kinetic probe for drug metabolism.
Formula:C15H24O2Purity:Min. 96 Area-%Color and Shape:PowderMolecular weight:236.35 g/mol
