• Comenic acid

    CAS:

Comenic acid is a metal chelate that is used as a model system to study the effects of disulfide bonds on signal pathways. It has been shown to reduce neuronal death in a tissue culture model. Comenic acid binds to glutamate, which leads to hydroxylation, and formaldehyde production. This reaction produces sodium salts and cyclic peptides that are toxic to cells. The mechanism of action of comenic acid is not well understood, but it may be due to metal chelation properties and the formation of reactive oxygen species, such as superoxide anion or hydrogen peroxide. Comenic acid also has a protective effect against seizures in mice with epilepsy and magnesium salt can decrease the concentration of this compound in the blood stream.
