:Niclosamide
Description:
Niclosamide is an anthelmintic agent primarily used to treat tapeworm infections in humans and animals. It is classified as a salicylanilide and exhibits a broad spectrum of activity against various parasitic worms. The compound is characterized by its white to off-white crystalline powder form, which is practically insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and dimethyl sulfoxide. Niclosamide functions by inhibiting the oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondria of the parasites, leading to their energy depletion and eventual death. Additionally, it has garnered interest for its potential antiviral and anticancer properties, as it has been shown to inhibit certain cellular pathways involved in viral replication and tumor growth. The substance has a relatively low toxicity profile in humans when used as directed, but it can cause side effects such as gastrointestinal disturbances. Due to its specific mode of action and low solubility, niclosamide is often formulated in combination with other agents to enhance its therapeutic efficacy.
