It is used in the synthesis of antibiotics such as 7-aminocephalosporanic acid. 2-(1H-1,2,3,4-Tetrazol-5-yl)acetamide has been shown to have antibacterial activity against organisms such as chlorobium tepidum and pseudomonas putida. This compound also reacts with chlorine at room temperature to form hydrogen chloride gas.
