CAS:3-(Methylthio)-1-propanol is a chemical compound that inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the ribosomal protein S2. It has been used as a model system to study the effects of selenium compounds on human cells in vitro. 3-(Methylthio)-1-propanol has been shown to inhibit methionine synthase, an enzyme involved in the synthesis of methionine from homocysteine and serine. In addition, this compound has been shown to have fatty acid oxidation activity and can be used as a precursor for the synthesis of polymers such as poly(methylthiopropane). 3-(Methylthio)-1-propanol is produced by Saccharomyces cerevisiae under aerobic conditions in the presence of glucose and sodium succinate.
