• Methyl 4-methyl-2-pentenoate

    CAS:

Methyl 4-methyl-2-pentenoate is an amide that can be synthesized from propanamide and an α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compound. It has a chiral center and is therefore optically active. The enolates of methyl 4-methyl-2-pentenoate are more reactive than the corresponding esters because the enolate anion is a better leaving group. This reactivity difference is due to the fact that the attack of nucleophiles on the ester carbon atom is sterically hindered by the substituent group, whereas attack on the enolate carbon atom is not hindered. Methyl 4-methyl-2-pentenoate also reacts with electrophilic reagents to form addition products, such as β-unsaturated esters and amides.
