Allopregnanolone is a hormone that is synthesized from progesterone in the brain. It has been shown to have therapeutic effects on major depression, anxiety and other mood disorders, as well as seizure disorders. Allopregnanolone also has anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective properties. It binds to GABA receptors in the brain and inhibits the synthesis of glutamate. This leads to an increase in the activity of the anterior cingulate cortex, which is involved in mood regulation, and a decrease in the rate constant for cardiac contractions.
