3,3'-Di-O-methylellagic acid 4'-glucoside (DMEG) is a natural compound that has been shown to have antioxidative activity. DMEG binds to the active site of glyoxalase I and inhibits the production of glyoxal, a reactive metabolite that is believed to play a role in tumorigenesis. DMEG also binds to and inhibits the activity of transcription factors such as activator protein-1 (AP-1), nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), and E2F, which regulate gene expression. DMEG has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in vitro, with potent anticancer activity against erythroid cell lines. DMEG may be an effective treatment for age-related diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and diabetes mellitus type II.
