Pentolinium bitartrate

Description:
Pentolinium bitartrate is a quaternary ammonium compound primarily used as a ganglionic blocking agent in medical applications. It is characterized by its ability to inhibit neurotransmission at autonomic ganglia, leading to effects such as vasodilation and reduced blood pressure. The substance is typically presented as a white crystalline powder, soluble in water, which facilitates its administration in clinical settings. Its chemical structure includes a pentyl group attached to a nitrogen atom, contributing to its pharmacological properties. Pentolinium bitartrate is often utilized in the treatment of hypertension and other cardiovascular conditions, although its use has declined with the advent of newer antihypertensive agents. Safety and efficacy profiles are essential considerations, as with any pharmacological agent, and it is important to monitor for potential side effects, including hypotension and other autonomic disturbances. Overall, pentolinium bitartrate exemplifies the intersection of organic chemistry and pharmacology, showcasing how specific molecular characteristics can influence therapeutic applications.

  • Pentolinium tartrate

    CAS:

Pentolinium tartrate is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of noradrenaline to adrenaline, which is a pressor agent. It also inhibits oxidation and thus prevents damage to tissues. Pentolinium tartrate has been shown to lower blood pressure in both anesthetized and conscious animals. It also has potentiation effects on the activity of acetylcholine, an amine neurotransmitter involved in memory and learning. This drug binds to the hydroxylase enzyme in adrenomedullary cells and blocks the formation of catecholamines (including noradrenaline). Pentolinium tartrate does not have any effect on monoamine oxidase inhibitors.
