Description:

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a potent androgenic steroid and a derivative of testosterone, characterized by its role in the development of male characteristics and reproductive functions. It is synthesized from testosterone through the action of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. DHT is crucial for the development of male external genitalia during embryonic growth and plays a significant role in hair growth, prostate health, and libido in adult males. Chemically, DHT is a steroid hormone with a molecular formula of C19H30O2 and a molecular weight of approximately 290.45 g/mol. It is lipophilic, allowing it to easily cross cell membranes and bind to androgen receptors, exerting its biological effects. Elevated levels of DHT are associated with conditions such as androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness) and benign prostatic hyperplasia. Due to its potent effects, DHT is also a target for certain therapeutic interventions, including medications that inhibit 5-alpha reductase to manage conditions related to excessive androgen activity.

Dihydrotestosterone is a potent androgen that is used in hormone replacement therapy to treat conditions such as testosterone deficiency, delayed puberty, and impotence. It is also used to treat breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men. Dihydrotestosterone binds to the androgen receptor, which alters the expression of genes by altering their nucleotide sequences.
