:Teriparatide
Description:
Teriparatide is a synthetic form of parathyroid hormone (PTH) used primarily in the treatment of osteoporosis. It is characterized by its ability to stimulate bone formation, making it distinct from other osteoporosis treatments that primarily focus on inhibiting bone resorption. Teriparatide is administered via subcutaneous injection and is typically prescribed for patients at high risk of fractures. The substance is composed of the first 34 amino acids of human PTH, which are crucial for its biological activity. Its mechanism of action involves binding to PTH receptors on osteoblasts, promoting bone growth and increasing calcium absorption in the intestines and kidneys. Teriparatide has a relatively short half-life, necessitating daily administration for optimal therapeutic effects. Common side effects may include nausea, dizziness, and leg cramps. Due to its anabolic effects on bone, teriparatide is often considered for use in postmenopausal women and men with osteoporosis who have a history of fractures or significant bone loss.
