Bathophenanthroline disulfonic acid disodium salt is a fluorescent iron chelator that is used to study the effect of physiological levels of iron on human serum. Bathophenanthroline disulfonic acid has been shown to inhibit the binding of several different inhibitor compounds, including copper, zinc, and cadmium. The use of this compound in clinical studies has revealed that it can be used as an anticancer agent. It has also been shown to be an effective antiviral agent against influenza virus in vitro. Bathophenanthroline disulfonic acid is administered orally or intravenously at a dose between 0.1 and 10mg/kg body weight per day.
