:Mefloquine
Description:
Mefloquine is an antimalarial drug primarily used for the prevention and treatment of malaria, particularly in areas where the disease is resistant to other treatments. It is classified as a quinoline derivative and exhibits a unique mechanism of action by interfering with the parasite's ability to metabolize hemoglobin, leading to its death. Mefloquine is typically administered orally and is known for its long half-life, allowing for once-weekly dosing in prophylactic use. The compound is characterized by its lipophilic nature, which facilitates its distribution in body tissues. Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and potential cardiovascular effects. Due to its side effect profile, mefloquine is not recommended for individuals with a history of seizures or certain psychiatric disorders. Its efficacy and safety profile make it a valuable option in malaria-endemic regions, although careful consideration of patient history is essential before prescribing. Mefloquine's chemical structure includes a chiral center, contributing to its pharmacological properties and interactions within the body.

CAS:
Mefloquine is a drug that is used for the treatment of malaria. It binds to the heme moiety of the parasite's hemoglobin and prevents it from carrying oxygen. Mefloquine also blocks the parasite's ability to synthesize ATP, which is necessary for cell division. Mefloquine has been shown in clinical trials to be effective against falciparum malaria as well as other infections caused by parasitic organisms. The drug has been shown to have no significant adverse effects on eye health, although it can cause skin reactions such as toxic epidermal necrolysis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Mefloquine inhibits drug-metabolizing enzymes, including cytochrome P450 and uridine diphosphate glucuronyl transferase (UGT). This may increase the risk of toxicity when mefloquine is taken with drugs that are metabolized by these enzymes.
Formula:C17H16F6N2OPurity:Min. 95%Color and Shape:PowderMolecular weight:378.31 g/mol
