CAS 54-12-6
:(±)-Tryptophan
Description:
(±)-Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that plays a crucial role in protein synthesis and serves as a precursor for several important biomolecules, including serotonin, melatonin, and niacin. It is classified as a non-polar, aromatic amino acid due to its indole side chain, which contributes to its hydrophobic characteristics. Tryptophan is typically found in various dietary sources, including meat, dairy products, and certain plant-based foods. The substance exists as a white crystalline powder and is soluble in water, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Its molecular formula is C11H12N2O2, and it has a molecular weight that reflects its complex structure. In biological systems, tryptophan is involved in various metabolic pathways and is known for its role in mood regulation and sleep patterns. Additionally, it can be utilized in the synthesis of neurotransmitters, making it significant in neurochemistry. Due to its essential nature, adequate intake of tryptophan is vital for maintaining overall health and well-being.
