Pronethalol is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that has been shown to be effective against primary sclerosing cholangitis and chronic inflammatory bowel disease. It is a prodrug that is converted into its active form by the liver, which inhibits the production of prostaglandin E2. Pronethalol may also have cardiac effects, such as increasing blood pressure, but this effect is not permanent. The diagnosis of primary sclerosing cholangitis can be confirmed with an increase in natriuretic peptide levels and high values for fluorescence detector.
