Methyl 3-methyl-2-nitrobenzoate can be synthesized from allylic oxidation of methyl benzoate with sodium hypochlorite in the presence of copper sulfate catalyst. The reaction proceeds through an addition–elimination mechanism to produce the desired product and copper(II) chloride as a byproduct.
