Nitroglycerin

Description:
Nitroglycerin, with the CAS number 55-63-0, is a highly explosive organic compound classified as a nitrate ester. It is a colorless, oily liquid at room temperature, with a sweet taste and a characteristic odor. Nitroglycerin is known for its sensitivity to shock, heat, and friction, making it a powerful explosive used in dynamite and other munitions. Chemically, it is formed by the nitration of glycerol with a mixture of nitric and sulfuric acids. In addition to its explosive properties, nitroglycerin has medical applications, particularly in the treatment of angina pectoris, as it acts as a vasodilator, relaxing blood vessels and improving blood flow. It is soluble in alcohol and ether but only slightly soluble in water. Due to its instability and potential for detonation, nitroglycerin must be handled with extreme care, and its storage conditions are strictly regulated to prevent accidental explosions.
