    <p>Trimethyltin hydroxide is a neurotoxic organotin compound that is used as an antiseptic and disinfectant. Trimethyltin hydroxide has been shown to inhibit the production of chemoattractant protein in microglia cells, which are immune cells that are involved in the development of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Trimethyltin hydroxide has also been shown to affect neuronal death through its interaction with neurotrophic factors. This compound has been shown to be effective in vivo as well as in vitro, where it was demonstrated to kill prostate cancer cells. The trimethyltin ion may be formed intramolecularly by reacting with a thiostrepton molecule or by reacting with a malonic acid molecule. These x-ray diffraction data show that the trimethyltin ion binds to the DNA and inhibits transcriptional activity on both strands of DNA, inhibiting synthesis of RNA and protein.</p>
