It has been shown to have mitochondrial membrane potential and inhibitory effects on the activities of enzymes such as sodium carbonate transferase and phosphofructokinase. 1,2-Benzanthracene also inhibits the growth of mouse tumor cells in culture through interference with protein synthesis. 1,2-Benzanthracene has been shown to be a skin carcinogen in animals. It can be used as a fluorescent probe for detection of benzenes in environmental samples, including wastewater treatment plants.
