This chemical compound binds to chloride ions and ammonium nitrate ions and forms a carbanion. The carbanion can then react with hydrogen bonds with other molecules, forming new compounds. X-ray diffraction studies have revealed that methyl 2-(chlorosulfonyl)acetate binds to cancer cells through hydrogen bonds and kills the cells by causing them to undergo apoptosis, or programmed cell death.
