Cefmetazole sodium is a penicillin-type antibiotic that inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. It binds to the penicillin-binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall by competitive inhibition, preventing the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. Cefmetazole sodium has been shown to be active against a wide variety of bacteria, including gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The drug's activity against most strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has been confirmed.
