CAS 57-24-9
:Strychnine
Description:
Strychnine is a highly toxic alkaloid derived from the seeds of the Strychnos nux-vomica tree, primarily found in Southeast Asia and Australia. It is classified as a central nervous system stimulant and is known for its potent effects on the body. Strychnine acts as an antagonist of glycine receptors, leading to increased neuronal excitability and muscle spasms, which can result in convulsions and, in high doses, can be fatal. The substance is a white, crystalline powder that is soluble in water and alcohol, with a characteristic bitter taste. Due to its toxicity, strychnine has limited medical applications, primarily in very controlled settings, and is more commonly recognized for its historical use in rodenticides and as a performance-enhancing agent in certain sports. Safety precautions are essential when handling strychnine, as even small amounts can lead to severe poisoning. Its use is heavily regulated in many countries due to its dangerous properties.
