CAS 57-92-1
:Streptomycin
Description:
Streptomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that is primarily used to treat infections caused by certain bacteria, particularly those associated with tuberculosis. It is produced by the bacterium *Streptomyces griseus* and has a complex structure that includes an amino sugar and a hexose component. Streptomycin functions by inhibiting protein synthesis in bacteria, specifically by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, which disrupts the translation process. This antibiotic is effective against a variety of Gram-negative and some Gram-positive bacteria. It is typically administered via injection due to its poor absorption from the gastrointestinal tract. Common side effects may include ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity, and allergic reactions. Streptomycin is often used in combination with other antibiotics to enhance efficacy and reduce the risk of resistance. Its use has declined in some areas due to the emergence of resistant strains, but it remains a critical option in the treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. As with all antibiotics, appropriate use is essential to minimize the development of resistance.
