Midazolam is a short-acting benzodiazepine with hypnotic and sedative properties. It is used for the treatment of status epilepticus, for premedication before surgery, or for the short-term treatment of insomnia. Midazolam also has an anti-convulsant effect and can be used to inhibit the spread of local anaesthetic agents in regional nerve blocks. As an intravenous drug, it is typically administered at a dose between 0.1 mg and 1 mg per kilogram of body weight, although higher doses may be given by continuous infusion over several hours. The drug binds to GABA A receptors in the brain, which increases the frequency of chloride ion channel opening resulting in increased inhibition of neurotransmission between neurons.
