It is believed that 3Beta-acetoxy-5-cholestene affects the brain by increasing the production of serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter and hormone that affects mood. The chemical structure of 3Beta-acetoxy-5-cholestene consists of a hydroxy group, dodecyl, and two fatty acids. This compound also has antiinflammatory properties that are attributed to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. The effects of 3Beta-acetoxy-5-cholestene on animals are similar to those of some antidepressants, including imipramine and amitriptyline.
