:2-Hydroxy-3-methylbutanedioic acid
Description:
2-Hydroxy-3-methylbutanedioic acid, commonly known as mesaconic acid, is a dicarboxylic acid characterized by its two carboxyl (-COOH) groups and a hydroxyl (-OH) group attached to a five-carbon chain. It is a colorless, crystalline solid that is soluble in water and exhibits a slightly acidic nature due to the presence of the carboxylic acid groups. The compound has a molecular formula of C5H8O4 and features a chiral center, which contributes to its stereochemistry. Mesaconic acid is used in various applications, including organic synthesis and as an intermediate in the production of certain pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. Its derivatives can also be utilized in the synthesis of polymers and other complex organic compounds. Additionally, it plays a role in metabolic pathways in certain organisms, highlighting its biological significance. Safety data indicates that it should be handled with care, as with many organic acids, to avoid irritation or adverse reactions.

CAS:2-Hydroxy-3-methyl-butanedioic acid is a natural compound that belongs to the group of regulatory molecules. It is a metabolite of 2,3-dihydroxypropanoic acid and it is biosynthesized in bacteria by dehydrogenase enzymes. It has been shown to have allosteric binding on the Nudix hydrolase domain and inhibit the activity of this enzyme. The size exclusion chromatography technique was used to determine that 2-hydroxy-3-methyl-butanedioic acid inhibits the growth of Neisseria meningitidis bacteria. This compound has also been found to be useful in diagnostic tests for detecting Neisseria meningitidis infections.Formula:C5H8O5Purity:Min. 95%Molecular weight:148.11 g/mol
